Depending upon the range of material application, either hardened (hardness 55 HRC) or unhardened (tensile
strength 600 N/mm2) shafts are used.
SHAFT DESIGN
The accuracy of the shape of the shaft (the roundness and cylindrical shape) is of great importance. Shape errors should be limited to the order of≤IT 2.
Accurately shaped shafts encourage the build-up of oil film and provide low-level noise. Shaft diameters of
quality IT3 or IT4 can be selected. Shafts that have been treated with rust protection must be thoroughly cleaned before assembly (lubricant contamination).
SHAFT ROUGHNESS
A further significant factor is the roughness of the shaft. The values (according to DIN-ISO 1302) should be
between Ra0.03÷0.2μm.
